In September we had our second annual village Scarecrow Festival. As ever villagers rose to the challenge of making some wonderfully unique, well-crafted, original and funny entries, that could be spotted all around the village. This year we had categories for children and adults, with cash prizes for first, second and third place awarded for each category and a box of maltesers for everyone who make a scarecrow. Locals could vote for their favourites at the prize giving and fun day at the Old School Hub. The overall first prize went to the very funny and popular straw bail Minions characters in the children’s category. The adults winner was the display of pirates, including a treasure chest inhabited by a giant octopus and other sea creatures, a grog table and mini pirate ship! Runners up included “Fred-a-Scare” pudding on his top hat and dancing under a mirror ball; The Wind in the Willows consisting of Toad of Toad Hall and his friends Ratty, Mole and Badger; Bonnie the Bunny from the video game Five Nights at Freddy’s; Elsa and Olaf from Frozen; footballers scoring a goal for the team “The Mini White Wolves” (like local side Louth Town). Other great entries included some beautiful dancing mermaids with a pool full of sea-life friends; the Mummy of King Tutankhamun on the loose, “Come Fly With Me” in which friends float off on balloons; dualling Knights in Armour: a Gentleman Scarecrow in a top hat; a happy cyclist; upside down gymnast; an archer; surfer and Little Red Riding Hood among other wonderful entries. Residents and passers-by through the village expressed how much they enjoyed see the scarecrows and appreciating the effort and ingenuity that went into making them. We hope that next year more villagers will join in and make it again a very memorable and fun week, showing off the abundance of talents and good humour we’re lucky to have in Saltfleetby!
