In September 2024 the fourth annual Saltfleetby Scarecrow Festival was held. This year there were 18 scarecrows made by creative villagers of all ages. The first started to appear on Sunday 1st September, with more added throughout the week. Our local postman, Gavin, asked if anyone would make one of him, then was honoured with TWO "Gav the Postman" scarecrows! One of the event organisers, Donna, appeared on the Radio Lincolnshire breakfast show to talk about the event.
A map on the festival's website was kept updated to help people find the scarecrows that were displayed in all parts of the village. This year they were judged by Councillor Noi Sear and her husband Dave, who visited all the scarecrows in person, before announcing the winners at the Fun Day on Saturday 7th September. The winners were: Funniest: Mr Fredericksen from UP, Most original: Top Cat, First place for one made by under 16: Show Jumper, 2nd under 16: Jurassic Park, 3rd under 16: Mr Fredericksen from UP. First prize for made by over 16: Top Cat, 2nd over 16: Worzel Gummidge, 3rd over 16: The Wizard of Oz. The Overall Winner was Top Cat.
There was a gift for everyone who made a scarecrow, prizes for the winners and a trophy for the overall winner to keep until the next event.
Despite the damp weather the Fun Day was much enjoyed. The hall at Marshland’s Community Centre was filled with craft stalls selling all kinds of locally produced, original, handmade treats and gifts. There was a fascinating, unique display of antique woodworking tools. Outside everyone could try archery with the Louth and District Archers. The Coastal Scout Group ran a variety of colourful, fun and exciting games. Saltfleetby Ladies Walking Football hosted games of Beat the Goalie. There was a bouncy castle and a display of classic cars and motorcycles. The delicious catering was provided by SpudWagon, Pie-o-neers and Lincs Barista Ltd.
Live music was performed by the duo “TRAKBAK” with lots of popular songs from throughout the decades. There was also a wonderful singalong led by the “Can't Sing Choir”.
The money made from the Fun Day was split equally between Lindsey Age UK and The Saltfleetby Play Park Fund who both received £155.00.
