Our 5th Annual Scarecrow Festival.
Scarecrows began appearing around the village from Monday 1st September. The winners were announced at the Prize-Giving Fun-Day at Marshlands Community Centre on Saturday 6th September.
It was an amazing afternoon with a great turn out and wonderful team of volunteers. Lots of entertainment was enjoyed, with live music by “Three Steps to Heaven” who played a popular range of classic Rock and Roll hits from the 1950s, 60s and 70s. Kate Marshall ran the children’s games, tombola and raffle, with help from Linda Appleby and Amanda Johnson. Local businesses donated some wonderful prizes and vouchers for meals out and takeaways. There was a bouncy castle for the children, classic cars and craft stalls. Thanks goes to Trish Atkinson for helping out organising and setting up, Amy Epton for running the bar, and Jill Facer for all her help.
Again, the villagers of Saltfleetby did a fantastic job of making some great, original, funny and colourful hand-crafted scarecrows. There were 15 entries into the competition this year, made by both children (under 16) and adults (over 16). The map on the event website was updated to show their exact location and make it easy for people to find and see them in person.
Again, Councillor Noi Sear and her husband Dave had the unenviable task of judging the fantastic scarecrows. The Winners were: Best made by under 16: Little Shop of Horrors (at Woodlands on the Main Road), 2nd under 16: The Big Friendly Giant (on Three Bridge Lane) and 3rd under 16: Wicked (on Church Lane). Best made by over 16: The Resting Gardener (on North End Lane), 2nd over 16: Super Jars (on Three Bridge Lane) and 3rd was Hay! Doctor (on the Main Road in St Clements).
The Overall Winner was The Magic Roundabout (on Saltergate) who took home the trophy again for another year. An extra prize was awarded to Santa on Holiday (at Grove Farm) for a good effort and display.
All participants were presented with a box of Matchmakers mint chocolates, the winners took home large tins of assorted chocolates.
A competition was also held to see who could grow the Tallest Sunflower from free packs of seeds that were given away earlier in the year. The winner was Allan Burgess who managed to grow a sunflower to the impressive height of 2.27meters. Another prize went to Barbara Ryan for one of her sunflowers having 7 heads.
This year we were raising money for the Saltfleetby Community Park Fund. Together we raised £477.45 to go towards the aim of providing a community park for the village, not only to have a play area for the children but a community garden and a memorial area for everyone to enjoy.
