Scarecrow Festival 2023

An original variety of beautiful, funny and weird scarecrow creations began popping up all over the village from Monday 4th September! Our third annual Scarecrow Festival had 17 competition entries consisting of about 30 individual scarecrows. The whole village joined in with wonderful characters appearing outside houses from the west end of the Main Road to near the sea in the east of the village, down single-lane back streets, in fields and even on a roof! This year as well as prizes for the best scarecrow made by an adult, child and overall winner, there were new categories for "Funniest Scarecrow" and "Most Original Idea".

The winners were decided by everyone who attended the Fun Day on Saturday 9th September, who could cast their votes with the help of a display showing all the entries. "JAWS" was the overall winner was also the winner of best made by a child as well as Funniest and Most Original! A very popular creation: a fierce homemade shark lurking in a hedge on Back Street is seen eating its unfortunate victim!

The children’s 2nd place winner were builders on the roof of a house being built on Three Bridge Lane, getting on with work as well as reading the paper, enjoying a drink and waving to passers-by!  Children’s 3rd prize was awarded to a Toy Story display on the Main Road, featuring Woody, Buzz and Forky complete with his googly eyes!

The adults’ 1st prize went to the scarecrow fireman who climbed a ladder to rescued a cat stuck up a tree on the Main Road.  Adults’ 2nd prize went to a display of Beatrix Potter characters on Saltergate: Peter Rabbit, Mother Rabbit and Mrs Tiggywinkle, all made from paper mache with home-sewn costumes. Adults’ 3rd prize was won by “Lets Play Catch” on The Main Road in St Clement, depicting two children enjoying a game of throwing a ball to each other.

Great food and entertainment was enjoyed at the fun day. Live music was performed by “Chain Gang” a duo playing all our favourite hits particularly from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Animals, bouncy castle, art and craft stalls, classic cars and games provided lots to keep all the family busy on the beautiful sunny afternoon.
